Want to publish your own games for the next generation? Well soon this will be possible for the next generation of consoles.
Microsoft’s XBOX One console may be getting a bit friendlier. Microsoft confirmed this week that the upcoming console will also act as a developer debugging unit as it works with indie developers to provide a better experience. Each £429 unit will run in-progress game code, allowing developers to get all they need at a more affordable cost. This bucks the trend of previous generations where a debug console would be more expensive and look slightly different.
This latest news wouldn’t make sense unless Microsoft relaxed regulations on publishing, which they have done. Microsoft currently allows developers to publish to the XBOX Live indie marketplace but will now allow developers to self-publish
Vice President Marc Whitten said:
“Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We’ll have more details on the program and the timeline at gamescom in August.”
