Oops, UK Prime Minister – David Cameron – might have just got himself into some deep and fiery water. The UK PM has now had an official Twitter account for some time, using the channel as a means of self-publicity and public announcements. Sadly, we don’t think ‘Dave’ himself holds the reigns on the account – more likely some PA or Media secretary, but still in the public eye, it’s his words. So, when the PM’s Twitter account began to follow ‘high profile-escorts’, we raised our eyebrows. Was Dave endorsing escort agencies?
Carlton’s of London Escorts says on its website that it offers the:
“finest London escorts to gentlemen of distinction”.
We thought so…
Swiftly, Number 10 reiterated that a ‘follow’ on Twitter did not constitute the PM’s endorsement. Yeah…
This is follows a string of ‘slip-ups’ on the PM’s account. Last month, an offensive tweet about William Hague (Foreign Secretary) was ‘Favorited’.
Prior to 2009, the account automatically followed that of any one who followed them. This was stopped as ‘inappropriate’ accounts began to filter through.
“As a result of this legacy, the @Number10gov account follows almost 370,000 accounts and we have taken steps to un-follow as many as possible that are inactive, spam or inappropriate. This work is ongoing.”
In many ways we know so much about our politicians, their lives are lived in the media. But, this taste was something new for us all. We didn’t have Dave down as a ‘client’, maybe it’s part of the ‘”Big Society”.
