Car what? CarPlay… Yes, that’s right… CarPlay.
Apple has launched its new in-car interface that is planned to work with Ferrari, Mercedes and Volvo models this year.
Cars revealed at the Geneva Auto Show will be designed “from the ground up” to work with iPhone. Offering a Siri-touch based interface to control your phone; users will be able to access voicemail, contacts, notifications, map directions and music. A lot to be distracted by. The authorities are going to love that.
From launch, users will also be able to control third party apps such as Spotify. Controls will be accessible via the steering wheel and a touch UI will be available via the in-car screen. The interface is similar to the iOS home screen – so nothing new there.
Soon to be available to all users of the iPhone 5 and above, it will be a simple OTA update.
Any doubt that your car won’t be supported? Well Apple says that new cars from BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai andToyota will support CarPlay in 2014.
We’ll see how this one goes. It’s been a long journey for the iPhone, this being its next chapter.
